Key Benefits

The Schenectady APPS project was introduced to the community in 1995. APPS provides pregnancy prevention services to at-risk youth in the Hamilton Hill/Vale Community. Carver Community Center, Inc. is the Lead Agency for the project governed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. The program offers primary and secondary pregnancy prevention services and education as well as support to pregnant and parenting teens. Referrals are accepted by all community agencies within the zip codes of 12307, 12308 and 12304.

There are two satellite organizations providing services under the direction of the Program Coordinator.

• Schenectady Child Guidance Center: This site offers a six-week program entitled, “Tackling Life’s Challenges.” Services are open to males and females ages 12-18. The focus is on self-esteem, goal setting, decision making and healthy relationships.

• Carver Community Center: They offer weekly groups open to youth ages 12-18. These groups are an open discussion format touching on such topics as relationships, HIV/AIDS, sexual and health education, pregnancy prevention, etc. Case management services are also offered to those between the ages of 12-18 who are pregnant, parenting or classified as “at risk” of becoming pregnant.

• Family and Child Services of Schenectady: They offer a program in which the primary goal is to promote and/or enhance positive relationships between youth and adults, especially their parents. The goal is to promote assets that each youth will need to succeed, to promote effective parenting practices and to promote positive relationships with children and as least one caring adult through the use of mentoring and community link-ages.

All services are provided in collaboration with the Carver Community Center and Schenectady County, under the guidance of a local APPS Community Council and the Office of Children and Family Services.
