YOUTH SERVICES PROGRAM
700 Craig Street, Schenectady, NY 12307 • 374-8456 x111
Key Benefits
The Carver Community Center Youth Services Program offers structured,
pro-social services to children, ages 7 to 16, in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood
and the City of Schenectady. The program stresses self-esteem building, decision
making skill development, leadership, education and teamwork.
The program currently runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday,
10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and Sundays for adults — 10:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m., with scheduled activities each day. But it’s not all play! Participant
brings their homework and must complete the assignments before engaging in the
“fun” activities.
The Youth Services Program also enjoys the participation of several community
agencies in helping to develop strong young adults. Agencies such as Planned
Parenthood, Child Guidance and Carver’s own Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention
Support Services and Community Counseling provide children with answers to
questions that will help them lead healthy and productive lives.
Beginning in February 2001, Carver took the lead in our County by developing a
Gang Prevention initiative, through a grant from the Juvenile Justice Division
of the State of New York. This initiative has augmented our current Youth
Services Program, as well as work with other agencies, schools, churches and
civic groups throughout the County to work on this pressing problem facing our
community.
Carver’s Youth Services Program believes that there is a potential within all
children that needs to be realized and emphasized. Children need support and
guidance to help them think through difficult choices that will affect their
future. The staff encourages them to be responsible and to show leadership in
their own community. Participation allows them to express themselves verbally,
as well as creatively. Our youths interact with individual staff members,
helping our participants to develop a vision and a plan of action for their
future.
